Colombia Earthquake Emergency

One Colombia, many hands, multiple ways to help

On August 10, 2026, Colombia experienced firsthand how, in a matter of seconds, everything that seemed firm could be shaken. A magnitude 7.4 earthquake, centered in San José del Palmar, Chocó, at a depth of 103 kilometers, struck a large portion of the national territory, becoming the highest magnitude earthquake recorded in Colombia in the 21st century.

The Society of Jesus in Colombia has launched a unified institutional response that coordinates its entire Apostolic Body across the country: schools, pastoral ministries, universities, social centers, the Ignatian Youth Network, and Fe y Alegría. Working together under a single action plan, we combine capacities, resources, and teams to accompany the most vulnerable communities affected by the earthquake.

This response encompasses both immediate humanitarian relief and the recovery and reconstruction processes that will be required over the coming months, with a special focus on the individuals and communities facing the highest vulnerability.

Our action plan

Stage 1

Immediate Humanitaria Response

(0 – 30 days)

Emergency relief, distribution of essential supplies, establishment of collection points, and emotional and spiritual first aid for affected individuals and families.

Stage 2

Stabilization & Support

(Months 1 – 3)

Psychopedagogical and emotional accompaniment in educational works, rural food security support through social centers, and setup of temporary classrooms and community support spaces.

Stage 3

Reconstruction & Livelihoods

(Months 3 onwards)

Physical rehabilitation of damaged infrastructure, comprehensive rural development, and consolidation of medium and long-term community projects to restore dignified living conditions.
